Customization is best done when thorough research of the job seeker and the business needs is complete. If the hiring process is likely to focus attention predominately on the individual’s shortcomings, then job customization is used to accentuate their unique assets or contributions.
Job carving should not be used to pull undesirable tasks from other workers’ duties. A job that has been customized for an individual is more likely to meet the person’s needs than one that just happened to be available.
Care must be taken not to create jobs that devalue people by physically separating them from other workers or by having them perform tasks considered bothersome or dangerous.
